Before I get to the job specifics, let me tell you about me, my company and the coaching position.

My name is Kieran Igwe and I run a fitness and nutrition coaching company called Diligent Fitness in Rodley, Leeds.

My business is dedicated to helping people get into the best shape of their life through customised nutrition and fitness programmes. And business is going great! So I’m looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and energetic person to start training some of our clients at my studio on Oaklands Road in Rodley.

I currently offer customised fitness programmes, semi-private training sessions (one coach, 2-3 clients), group exercise classes and nutrition coaching which educate, motivate and support clients to improve their health and fitness.

All clients begin with an initial 12-week coaching package which includes nutrition coaching, exercise programme design, nutritional supplements, a monthly fitness assessment and weekly training sessions here at the studio.

If you are hired for this coaching position, we’ll build you up to coaching clients in the studio 3-5 days a week for 3–4 hours per day (either am or pm).

Step 1: the 4 week internship. You’ll start off going through our 4 week internship where you get the equivalent of a £540 training package on us to experience first hand what it’s like to be a client. You’ll learn A LOT about fitness coaching, programme design and what it takes to be a successful PT. We’ll also get you up to speed with a combination of shadowing, education and training for all the tasks you’ll be responsible for.

The internship requires 10-15 hours/week for 4 weeks. And it’s designed to be flexible so it can work around other commitments you may have. We’re investing a great deal in you in terms of time, coaching and education during the 4 week intern stage. And as a result the intern position is unpaid.

Step 2: the 3 month trial. After your 4 week internship if you’re a good fit, and you’ve proved you have what it takes to be part of our team we’ll offer you a 3 month trial agreement. During this time we’ll assign you clients to work with on a contractual basis, building up your client base over the months.

Bottom line: once we hire you expect at least 10-15 hours working with clients each week at up to £19.50 per hour. You will be paid as an independent contractor and have the opportunity to progress through the ranks and earn up to £24/hour (and go full-time) after the 3 month trial period. My studio is clean and tidy at all times, offers a fun environment, well-maintained training equipment and the opportunity to learn the inner-workings of a successful personal training studio.

Oh yeah, I like to think I’m fair, respectful and appreciative. I like making money as a result of providing highly valuable fitness services and products to help our clients reach their goals. You will be compensated fairly, treated fairly, and I will certainly look for ways to pay you more for your efforts if they warrant it. I want someone who enjoys working with people and making a difference in the lives of others… because that’s what we do in my studio.

Tasks You’ll Be Expected To Perform

  • Implement our tried and tested health and fitness programmes for clients. You’ll receive coaching and training on our fitness system and programmes (which we use to guarantee results with clients). Within the basic framework you’ll have the flexibility to incorporate your own training style and knowledge.
  • Tracking client progress. To ensure a client’s success in our programme, you’ll need to track weekly progress, current successes and challenges, review client nutrition and exercise workout logs and more on a weekly basis. It will be your job to hold a client accountable to his/her health and fitness programme to ensure the best results possible.
  • Perform fitness evaluations. Ideally you’ll have some fitness assessment skills and can test for: body composition, body weight, circumference measurements, blood pressure, heart rate and various strength and flexibility tests. You do not need previous experience (I’ll teach you all the assessments you need to know) but if you do have experience, that’s a bonus.
  • Coach clients through 12-week programme. You’ll be responsible for weekly exercise sessions and keeping detailed weekly progress reports on the clients you’re working with. If a client is having challenges throughout his/her programme, you’ll coach and motivate them, making appropriate changes to ensure consistent progress.
  • Demonstrate proper exercise instruction. This is a big one. I need you to be able to provide proper coaching, instruction and motivation during a client training session. You should have a working knowledge of the human body (muscles, movements and functions) and be able to advance/regress exercises appropriately for client’s goals.
  • Provide ongoing health and fitness education. Our clients rely on us to service all of their health and fitness needs. It’s your job as a fitness coach to provide your clients with health and fitness education on various topics that empower them to lead healthy lives forever. You’ll be provided with educational tools and resources, be expected to study them, and to speak about them with your clients. We also spend time covering this in our weekly staff meetings.

Required Skills

These are the skills you must already have in order to qualify for this position:

  • Good communication skills. You will be talking with my clients, who are VERY important to me. You must be comfortable conversing in-person and on the phone, and know how to conduct yourself professionally and deliver clear instructions to the clients. I’ll teach you everything you need to do during a training session, but I can’t teach you manners and professionalism.
  • People skills and personality. You must LOVE working with people! As mentioned above you must be very comfortable working with people. This is a positive, upbeat environment and you must be able to show your clients energy and enthusiasm while working with them.
  • Health and fitness education. You do not need personal training experience, but you should have a working knowledge of health and fitness.
  • Neatness. More of a trait than a skill – you do need to be tidy. Our studio is an intimate environment and as such everything has it’s place. We expect you to put all equipment back where it belongs, in the correct order as soon as you’ve finished with it. Know that we’re fanatical about neatness.
  • Walk your talk. You must be in great shape yourself; we absolutely believe in leading by example so regular gym-based exercise sessions and sound nutrition principles are already an integral part of your lifestyle.

Bonus Skills

If you have these additional skills, your CV will go right to the top of the stack (but if you don’t have these skills, you should still apply because they are not mandatory).

  • Previous personal training experience (fitness studio, health club gym, in-home trainer etc.)
  • Basic nutrition knowledge
  • Have a fitness instructing or personal training certification (Reps level 2, S&C and sports science students and graduates also considered)
  • Certificate in First Aid

How To Apply

I’m looking to hire the right person relatively quickly. If this job sounds good to you, then complete the web form at the top right hand side of this page and if you’re what we’re looking for we’ll contact you by phone to arrange an interview.

Again, thanks very much for your interest,

Kieran Igwe

Founder, Diligent Fitness

P.S. This is not the type of job where just showing up is enough. Performance is everything to me. If you perform, you will be rewarded. I want nothing more than to find a person who takes real interest in doing good work and taking care of our clients. If that’s you, I promise that £19.50 is only the starting point. I recognise and reward performance.

With all that said, as I mentioned in the headline on this page, enthusiasm and a positive attitude go a long way in my book. I’m a positive, results-driven business owner and appreciate those qualities in others. As long as you have the basic skills I mentioned, and a great attitude, you’re definitely a candidate. So send me your info today.
